Thank you for your interest in the maiden AFRICA IN THE NEW DECADE CONFERENCE on the conscious implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in Africa, the extraordinary session/parliamentary sitting and Peace Banquet/Award Ceremony of the Africa Youth Parliament (AYP), taking place from 23rd -27th March 2020 in Federal Capital Territory (Abuja), Nigeria under the theme: ‘Agenda 2030: New Possibilities for African Youths’. The Conference is organised in partnership with the Office of the Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Office of the Secretary to the Federation, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Federal Ministry Youths and Sports Development, Federal Republic of Nigeria and National Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies, Abuja. 1.0. CONFERENCE SCHEDULE/MODALITIES: Theme: “AGENDA 2030: NEW POSSIBILITIES FOR AFRICAN YOUTHS” Date: March 23-27, 2020 Venue: International Conference Centre, Area 11, Abuja. Time: 10:00 am daily The weeklong Conference is comprised of segments as explicated below: Day 1: Monday 23 March, 2020: Arrival and accreditation of delegates. -Courtesy visits to selected members of the Nigerian executive arm of government, including the Office of the Vice President, Office of the Secretary of the Federation, Hon. Ministers of Youth and Sports Development; National Planning, Finance and Education. -Courtesy visits to the Principal Officers of the Nigerian National Assembly. Day 2: Tuesday 24 March, 2020: The Opening Ceremony/Public Lecture This segment shall be open to the public, and hopes to attract the participation of top government officials and Principal Officers of parliaments from across Africa; international development partners; policy analysts and governance/development experts; members of the civil society etc. The Public Lecture on the theme of the conference, “AGENDA 2030: NEW POSSIBILITIES FOR AFRICAN YOUTHS” shall be delivered by Mr. Sunday Dare, Honourable Minister of Youths and Sports Development, which will be followed by a brief questions and answers session. There shall also be Goodwill Messages from a vast array of dignitaries. The Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), GCON, will be the Special Guest of Honour and also declare the conference Open. Furthermore, the Opening Ceremony shall feature a World Press release; Dove/Balloons Release to signify peace and a call for disarmament in Africa and a brief Candlelight Procession to memorialize the victims of terrorism and extrajudicial killings in Africa. Day 3: Wednesday 25 March, 2020: The Conference of the African Youth Parliament At the conference, policy analysts, governance and development experts will weigh-in on the broad theme of the conference and the sub-themes, namely Education; Infrastructural development and Strong Institutions. This segment will attempt to critically appraise the performance of governments of the African region with respect to the SDGs. It will equally feature a Panel Session, where inputs will be gleaned from the experts on the strategies and techniques that can be employed by African nations and stakeholders, to achieve relative success on the three aspects of the SDGs that the conference shall be focusing on. 1st Panelist: Achieving the SDGs by African Nations: Focus on Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. 2nd Panelist: Achieving the SDGs by African Nations: Focus on Quality Education. 3rd Panelist: Achieving the SDGs by African Nations: Focus on Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure. Day 4: Thursday 26 March, 2020: The extraordinary session; The Peace Banquet and Cultural/Awards Night This extraordinary session is for members of the African Youth Parliament and interested observers. At this segment, the inputs from the Public Lecture; the Panel Discussions and the Goodwill Messages from previous segments will constitute the framework for deliberations. The submissions at this Conference will be harmonized into a communiqué, to be issued to the public. The communiqué will guide the engagement of the African Youth Parliament with the respective African governments and other relevant stakeholders, concerning its advocacy for the SDGs in Africa. As earlier indicated, the SDGs is a tested roadmap for the attainment of world peace. Therefore, the Peace Banquet and Awards that will follow the Conference will identify and honour governments, corporate organizations and private individuals whose efforts and commitments have contributed significantly to the process of peace-building and sustainable development in Africa.
